What is a Solar Engineering?

Institute of Solar Technology is India based renewable energy engineering, consultancy and training organisation, undertaking projects in India. IST has a diverse portfolio, and is experienced in system engineering, design, audit and education for both government and private enterprise. Their expertise covers both on grid and off grid renewable energy resources and commercial aspects of RE technology systems and power supplies.

The renewable energy industry is continually developing and changing, which means professionals need to stay up-to-date on the latest technologies, policies, and trends. IST offer information on continuing education courses in solar energy engineering through IST E-library facility for IST Students.

IST is pleased to inform that in order to facilitate the knowledge grinding and updation of students, IST has launched e-library for its students. The student subscriber of the e-library will have access of rich contents.

Solar engineers plan, design, and implement solar energy projects. They may manage anything from large-scale projects to home rooftop installations. The engineer typically begins with a client consultation, site assessment, and financial assessment, which help him or her understand the project's context. The engineer then designs an appropriate plan that takes all relevant factors into account. He or she may also oversee or manage implementation of the plan.

The solar power industry employs a wide range of occupations in a number of major industry segments: research and development, manufacturing of solar power materials, construction of solar power plants, operation of solar power plants, and solar power installation and maintenance. Sales occupations are also integral to the solar power products industry.

Chapter:

Basic Electrical Engineering

IST training offerings listed below cover Solar Photovoltaics (PV) topics and technologies. PV technologies generate electrical power by converting sunlight into electricity using the photovoltaic effect. Coursework, most of which is hands-on, will include such topics as AC/DC theory, basic wiring practices, applications of the Electric Code and other subjects as local needs require. Read Tutorial

Physic of Photovoltaic System

This chapter is part of the Solar Energy Engineering Program designed to cover all physics and engineering aspects of photovoltaics: photovoltaic energy conversion, technologies and systems. This chapter cover all the topics that are relevant for getting a broad overview on the different aspects of Solar Energy, with a focus on photovoltaics, which is the technology that allows to convert energy transported in light directly into electrical energy. Solar Resources for Photovoltaic System

How much energy a PV module delivers depends on several factors, such as local weather conditions, seasonal changes, and installation of modules. PV modules should be installed under the optimal tilt-angle in order to achieve best year-round performance.

Site Assessments

Building a solar power plant is complex and site selection requires years of research and planning. The proposed site must meet several criteria: large, relatively flat site, adequate sunlight, and minimal environmental impact once built. Prior to beginning construction on a new solar plant, real estate brokers and scientists must ensure the site is suitable and that the proper state, and local permits are obtained for construction of a power plant. PV Project Management

Safety for PV System Workers

Installation of PV System

Once a site has been selected, civil engineers are responsible for the design of the power plant and related structures. When construction begins, workers are needed to build the actual plant. Photovoltaic plants are less complex, requiring installation of arrays of photovoltaic panels before they are connected to transformers and the grid. Construction managers have the responsibility of managing the entire construction process. Civil engineers design and supervise the construction of power plants. Solar power plants can take a number of forms and sizes.
Solar photovoltaic installers must be able to work with power tools and hand tools at great heights, and possess in-depth knowledge of electrical wiring as well as basic math skills. Solar photovoltaic installers are often self-employed as general contractors or employed by solar plant installation companies.
Electricians install and maintain all of the electrical and power systems in a home or business. They install and maintain the wiring and control the equipment through which electricity flows. Electricians are responsible for connecting the solar panels, inverter, and other equipment to a building's power supply.
Plumbers install solar water heating systems.

System Inspection, Testing, Commissioning

System Operation and Maintenance

Workers at solar power plants install, operate, and maintain equipment. They also monitor the production process and correct any problems that arise during normal operation. Power plant operators monitor power generation and distribution from control rooms at power plants. They monitor the solar arrays and generators and regulate output from the generators, and they monitor instruments to maintain voltage to regulate electricity flows from the plant
