Tamil Nadu yet to warm up to rooftop solar scheme
State power utility Tangedco will establish floating solar power projects in the districts of Theni, Salem and Erode with a capacity of 250 MW and at an estimated cost of 1,125 crore.Besides, the Kadaladi Ultra Mega Solar Photovoltaic Park Power Project, with a capacity of 500 MW, will be established at a cost of 2,350 crore
On power allocation to various States, he said the power generated from these two units was distributed in the following quantum: Tamil Nadu 439 .02 mw (44 per cent), Karnataka 179.13 mw (18 per cent), Andhra Pradesh -133.18 mw (13 per cent), Telangana -155.65 mw (16 per cent), Kerala 82.24 mw (8 per cent) and Puducherry 10.78 mw- (1 per cent).
Power generation in the state has been on the rise in tandem with increasing demand from consumers in both domestic and industrial sectors. As part of government efforts to reduce dependence on thermal power plants and to promote green energy, the Union Government had introduced the Grid Connected Rooftop and Small Solar Power Plants project.
In 2017-18, the total installations done in the district under the scheme was a mere 42KW. However, officials said that it is a four-fold increase from 10KW in 2016-17. The biggest installations in the district recently are 7KW unit at the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board office and 5KW units at the RTO office and the block development offices in Vallioor and Pappakudi respectively.
